Most dimensional lumber sold today is either pressure treated with ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary), MCQ (Micronized Copper Quat) or MCA (Micronized Copper Azole). Larger lumber (2x8 and above) may still be treated with CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) in accordance to AWPA specifications.

CCA Pressure Treated Lumber
CCA has been used to treat lumber since the 1940s and is still considered the best treatment available for commercial, industrial and marine applications. Pressure treated wood containing CCA is no longer being produced for use in most residential settings.

ACQ Pressure Treated Lumber
ACQ preservative is a waterborne system developed to provide long-term protection to wood exposed in exterior applications. ACQ treated wood products are available for above ground, ground contact and fresh water contact such as decks, fences, and landscaping. ACQ is also an allowed treatment for lumber, timbers, landscape ties, fence posts, building and utility poles, land, freshwater and marine pilings, sea walls, decking, wood shingles, and other wood structures. ACQ has been around since 1990 and was the predominant treating chemical for lumber after CCA became unavailable for residential use. ACQ is highly corrosive and is no longer used as much as it once was. ACQ has been replaced in most applications by either MCA or MCQ.

MCQ Pressure Treated Lumber
Dimensional lumber treated with MCQ is an outstanding product. MCQ is colorless, odorless and only moderately corrosive to hardware and fasteners. The colorless nature of MCQ makes it attractive for contractors to build pressure treated projects using treated wood that is lighter, fresher, and more natural in appearance.

MCA Pressure Treated Lumber
MCA pressure treated lumber is probably the most readily available product of all the treated lumber. Like MCQ, it is colorless, odorless and only moderately corrosive to hardware and fasteners. MCA corrosion rates on metal products are similar to CCA. MCA pressure treated lumber can also be tinted at time of treatment to either a Cedar or a Redwood color.
